Como?

Have I ever told you just how awesome my roommate is? If there is one thing that I have learned from her it is that as a person it is not only my right but my responsibility to learn as much information as possible about everything--for example learning about politics and Spanish.

A couple weeks ago, Samantha signed up to take a shift at the Latin American festival running the Democratic booth. I accompanied her considering I don’t think it’s possible for us to go anywhere without the other. SO I am neither a democrat, a fluent Spanish speaker, nor a Utahan. All we did was hand out pamphlets informing Utah citizens about the goals their Utah political leaders have and we asked people if they were registered to vote. But if you know anything about Utah you know that Democrats and Utah in the same sentence is somewhat of an oxymoron. People, especially those wearing BYU shirts, wouldn’t even make eye contact with us. I’m not even exaggerating. I felt like I had the plague or something! My favorite was asking “are you registered to vote?” and people would stare at the ground and quickly say “No thanks.” ……..Right….I don’t think they even heard my question. It was cool though because in the end we did get a couple of people to register who weren’t registered to vote and whenever the few Utah democrats would pass by they shouted encouragements. Sooooo fun!

Oh and Samantha signed me up for the BYU democrats club because she thinks she’s really funny so we’ll be going to watch some debates this school year. Yea, we’re cool like that.

Last week I went to this back to school party at our student center. There was speed dating there so I jumped at that. You never know where you’ll be swept off your feet….ha…but clearly for me, it wasn’t there. Tables were lined up and the guys would rotate after 3 minutes. Samantha and I sat at a table and then the table filled with the manly men. Oh wait, after comparing my table with all the other tables I’m positive that I got the only table full of freshmen guys! Nooooo. My interest quickly disappeared and I kept thinking “Please don’t call me.” If anything I think I gave more advice about the first semester of college than about myself. That’s the irony of my life.

School is fantastic and I love my roommates and my apartment complex is wonderful. I’ve been quite the socialite. Huzzah!

Come What May and Love It

My first week back really, REALLY made me think about a talk called “Come what may and love it” given by Joseph B. Wirthlin a modern day apostle of Jesus Christ. It’s a wonderful, short and funny talk so if you haven’t read it or even just need a refresher here’s a link.

Wednesday afternoon I had a car full of stuff that I was moving into my new apartment. My new roommate, Samantha, who also happens to be one of my best friends, was in the passenger seat when all of a sudden smoke started coming through the AC vents (and the AC wasn’t even on). Obviously, I started making my way to the side of the road and was turning into a parking lot just as smoke began to “billow” (as Samantha recalls) out of the hood of my car. I parked the car in an insurance parking lot in front of 3 older men who were outside taking their break. Samantha thought the car was about to explode so she quickly grabbed her belongings and yelled “Get out of the car!” I forgot about all my belongings including my purse and jumped out the car yelling kind of incoherently to the 3 insurance men. I’m pretty sure I managed to say “Can you help us?”…..”What’s wrong with my car?”….. “Why is my car smoking?” all within 10 seconds and expected an answer from these insurance strangers. The best part was when the men came over to help us I forgot the hood doesn’t just pop open, but that I have to use a wrench of some sort to get it open.

Looking back at the situation I was totally blessed! One of the insurance guys had his own body shop so he found out was wrong and showed me. He then gave me estimates of what it would be to fix it and even compared prices of going to a big car place to a small local one. I went with his place because he was relatively cheap and helpful. I got to experience getting a tow truck and fixing the car. HUGE PAIN, but it was a BIG learning experience. Apparently, the radiator cap melted so the fluid was bubbling out. Then it got so hot that the radiator split. When the radiator split all that fluid got in another important area of the car so the system had to be flushed. The fan was overworking itself because of the fluid that was drying up and clogging the system……or something like that. But also looking back I drove up to the canyon earlier that week to meet some friends and I’m just so happy it didn’t happen there. Holy cow- that would have been the worst!

Yes, the first week was rough with car problems, having no food for 2 days, and being cranky.

This semester is going to be busy. I have tons and tons of papers, projects, and reading this semester. But I have a feeling I’m going to learn a lot so I’m excited. I love my apartment complex. Everyone is nice and down to earth which is sometimes hard to find at BYU. Already I’ve had a crazy fun experience at the Latin American Festival, but you’ll have to wait to hear about that on my next post!

Oh yeah….did I mention I have to memorize The Proclamation to the Family by October?
